From here, we travel to Somerset West, set on the slopes of the Helderberg with sweeping views of False Bay in the distance. A visit is made to Vergelegen, one of the grandest wine estates in South Africa. Vergelegen has been producing quality wines for over three hundred years. Guests enjoy an introduction to winemaking and can sample some of South Africa's finest wines.
A short drive then leads to Stellenbosch, the second-oldest European settlement in South Africa. We devote time to exploring the town, renowned for fine architectural examples and a picturesque setting among towering mountains and rolling vineyards. Your guide will bring the town's history to life while pointing out various places of note. A wine tasting at a famous winery near town follows lunch. Then it's on to Franschhoek, our overnight destination. The route we follow takes us over Hellshoogte and via one of the most impressive parts of the Winelands.
This day focuses on Franschhoek and the wine route surrounding the town. It is splendidly displayed, well maintained, and generally revered as the gastronomic capital of South Africa. We devote some time to visiting the monument erected in memory of the French Huguenots, who brought their winemaking skills to the valley in centuries past.
Then, we visit three of the finest wine estates in the area to experience first-hand how grapes are transformed into noble drink. Guests also have the opportunity to sample some of the fine wines and cheeses made in the traditional way. We return to Franschhoek in the late afternoon.
From Franschhoek, the tour travels west through Wellington to Darling. The wine route surrounding Darling was first introduced to the public in 2004. It has since become trendy for the fine quality and exceptional value of the wines produced in the region.
A visit to one of these wine producers in the area is made before a short reconnaissance of the town and a visit to Evita se Perron. Darling is renowned as a cultural and artistic hub, with some of the most well-known artists in the area exhibiting their works here. The visit to Darling is followed by a journey to the valley surrounding Riebeek Kasteel for a last wine farm visit before returning to Cape Town via the national highway, where guests are dropped off at any location.
