Our pre-tour consultant, Andrew, provided excellent guidance and crafted a perfect itinerary. The accommodations were excellent. Each location we stayed at added to the overall wonderful experience. African Sky delivered a memorable adventure, making it one of the best trips ever. We highly recommend them to anyone seeking an extraordinary South African journey.

FAQ

What special interests can be incorporated?
An interest in rock art can be pursued at the luxury Bushmanskloof Lodge, around three hours from Cape Town. Birdwatching can be incorporated at Greater Kruger and northern KwaZulu-Natal luxury lodges. Keen golfers will delight in the numerous luxury hotels and lodges near most of South Africa's finest golf courses. A visit to the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal can be included in your tour.
Is there an option for private security?
African Sky can arrange private security for your luxury tour if you specifically request it. We deal with a reputable company that specializes in personal protection. Once you have communicated the extent of the required security services, we will forward a quotation based on your requirements.
What will the dining experience be like?
Exceptional dining experiences are a hallmark of a luxury tour in South Africa, whether you are savoring a gourmet meal at a private lodge with the sounds of the wild providing the ambiance or enjoying a fine dining experience in one of the many top restaurants in Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, dining is world-class.
Can private charter flights be arranged?
Yes, many charter companies in South Africa operate throughout the country and region. You will have a choice of smaller aircraft in the Cessna range, small jests, and larger jet aircraft, which could include Gulfstream's or Bombardiers. When you communicate with us, please let us know what private charters you would be interested in so we may incorporate these flights into your tour itinerary.
Where is the best place to go on a luxury safari?
The private reserves that form part of the Greater Kruger National Park offer the finest luxury safaris in Big Five wilderness areas; the most notable of these reserves are the Timbavati and Sabi Sand. Private concessions in the national park are also home to some exceptional lodges.
Can children be accommodated on luxury tours?
Although not all itineraries are suitable for young children, we offer a luxury family tour and can tailor an itinerary to your specific requirements. The most important consideration is to avoid visiting areas where malaria is endemic with young children. However, many lodges are in malaria-free areas where a Big Five safari can be enjoyed.

Seasonal Recommendations

Spring (September to November)
Spring in South Africa is a fantastic season for a luxury tour. It offers international visitors a perfect opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes, cultures, and wildlife with which the country is blessed. In the Western Cape, blooming wildflowers grace Cape Town, the Winelands, and particularly places like Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Perfect conditions exist in the Garden Route and Drakensberg for scenic drives, and various whale species can be spotted off the coast. In the latter part of spring, newly born animals can be spotted in national parks and private reserves; most newborns arrive towards the end of October and the beginning of November.
Summer (December to February)

Summer is ideal for exploring the coastal regions of South Africa, where many fine beaches offer respite from the heat. Cape Town, the Overberg, and Garden Route should be considered destinations for your luxury tour during this time of year. The game reserves and national parks in the northern part of the country are hot and humid at this time of year; you could, however, still spot the Big Five and will have the opportunity to see these wild places lush and green and the many rivers that crisscross the landscapes flowing.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is an ideal time for touring all of South Africa; temperatures in the primary safari areas in and around the Kruger National Park are pleasant, and animals are more easily spotted because deciduous trees have started shedding their leaves, making it easier to spot them wandering through the bush. Cape Town is less crowded, but the days are still pleasant; the same applies to the Overberg and Garden Route. Addo Elephant Kruger offers excellent game viewing opportunities in the cooler weather, and hiking in the Drakensberg is a great outdoor activity during this time of year.

Winter (June to August)

If you plan a luxury tour during the South African winter months, from June to August, you will encounter cold and rainy weather in and around Cape Town. It is an ideal time of year for cozy wine tastings in beautiful cellars with a fire burning in the background. Winter is the best time of year for game viewing in the many conservation areas in the country, as animals are more concentrated around limited water sources during this time of year. The weather in KwaZulu Natal, especially on the north coast, is pleasant during winter.

Popular Luxury Tour Destinations

Below, we list destinations that would typically be included in these packages. Most destinations are in South Africa, though some regional highlights are often included in itineraries.

South Africa

South Africa is blessed with many destinations and attractions. Still, unfortunately, not all of these offer luxury accommodation options and are, as such, not suited for inclusion in these itineraries. The most popular areas in South Africa that do are:

Cape Town and Surroundings

Cape Town is the most popular destination visited on tours in South Africa. The city and its surrounding areas offer international visitors diverse luxury hotels, boutique hotels, and guest houses in dramatic settings ranging from the Atlantic Seaboard with its sweeping ocean views to vineyards against the magnificent Cape Fold Mountains backdrop. Here, you can choose from many activities and attractions, several of which you will indeed find appealing.

Coastal Towns

Coastal towns are some of the favorite destinations incorporated in luxury tour packages. The most notable are Paternoster on the West Coast, Kleinmond and Hermanus in the Overberg region, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the Garden Route, and Balito and Umhlanga on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Each of these destinations offers fantastic attractions and activities. Favorites include fishing, championship golf courses, whale watching and dolphin watching in season, unique historical attractions, and fine beaches washed by the waters of the Indian or Atlantic Oceans.

Private Reserves

South Africa's private reserves all feature luxury lodges, which are ideal for inclusion in itineraries focused on providing a luxury experience in South Africa. These properties are typically small and intimate, with four to twenty rooms. Service is impeccable, and dining is of the highest standard. Primary activities are open 4x4 game drives and walking in the wilderness accompanied by an armed ranger—natural immersion while savoring the lap of luxury. The most popular private reserve is Phinda in KwaZulu-Natal, Shamwari in the Eastern Cape, and Madikwe in the North West Province. The private reserves that form part of Greater Kruger are always at the top of the list, with the Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and Klaserie especially notable.

Franschhoek

An article about luxury tours in South Africa can only be comprehensive if Franschhoek is mentioned. The Cape Winelands town is frequently included in packages focused on the finer things in life. It is generally regarded as the food and wine capital of South Africa. Stunning architecture and a unique history endow the town with a particular character. The fertile valley in which it is located, and its towering mountains add to the attraction.

Regional Highlights

Here are the most sought-after regional highlights, often combined with a guided tour in South Africa; this is by no means the only available option when tailor-making a service.

Wilderness areas in Botswana and Namibia

Visits to the prime national parks and game reserves in Namibia and Botswana are often combined with a luxury private tour in South Africa. In Botswana, Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta are recommended as added-on destinations. Namibia's Etosha National Park and Sossusvlei are the most popular safari destinations. In all these locations, luxury camps and lodges offer some of the finest safari adventures in Africa.

Victoria Falls

No visit to Southern Africa is completed without gazing upon the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the world's most imposing natural spectacles. Two nights should ideally be spent in or near Livingstone in Zambia or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Both are easily accessible on daily flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Optional Activities

Some optional activities to consider adding to your luxury package:

Private Game Drives

Most lodges offer the opportunity to pre-book private game drives. On these drives, a ranger and tracker accompany only you and your traveling party in a dedicated game drive vehicle.

Hot-Air Ballooning

Hot air ballooning offers an exciting perspective on a region as you silently glide across the landscape with a bird's-eye view. This activity can be booked near Kruger Park, Sossusvlei, and the Cape Winelands.

Helicopter Tours

Helicopter tours are available in the Cape Peninsula and Sabi Sand in South Africa. This activity is also available in the Sossusvlei area of Namibia, the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and Victoria Falls.

Private Yacht Charters

Private Yacht Charters are available in Cape Town, Langebaan on the West Coast, and Knysna in Knysna on the Garden Route. Vessels of different sizes can be chartered to explore the coastline with coastline crew.
