A predator paradise, the Delta is a world-renowned stronghold for leopards, wild dogs, and many rare and unusual mammal and bird species.

Experiences to be Savored when traveling to the Okavango Delta

When visiting the Okavango Delta, the goal of your experience is mainly to maximize your game viewing. However, it is also essential to savor the small things - those fleeting moments where you truly realize the privilege of witnessing a particular sighting.

Channel Crossings

Animals cross the crystal-clear channels that separate many islands from one another. Even predators like lions, who usually avoid swimming, are forced to make these crossings in search of prey.

Cry of the Fish Eagle

There is something special about gazing out over the wilderness at sunset, with the fish eagle's cry providing the ambiance for this experience. The sound embodies Africa and her wild places and is one of the most beautiful sounds of the bush.

Mokoro Rides

Gliding silently through the reed-lined channels of the Okavango in a traditional canoe provides one of the best opportunities for spotting the rare sitatunga. It usually is very skittish and would disappear at the first sound of an approaching vehicle.

The Okavango is the pinnacle of safari destinations, gathering millions of animals and birds for a seasonal feast in the north of Botswana. Great herds migrate from far and wide to the delta as the desert shrubs give way to marshlands. The lodges in the Okavango Delta are among the most exclusive in the world, with only a handful of guests and only the best locations, with every comfort catered for.

Elephants, buffalo, lions, wild dogs, and many other large game and antelope species gather in large numbers and are sure sightings on a game drive. Fish Eagles and Kingfishers line the many meandering streams flowing through the open patches in the delta, waiting to cement a catch. Storks wade through the reeds, among them the critically endangered wattled crane, looking for their share of the feast. Swallows wizz by above the waters, catching insects, with crocodiles and hippopotami coming up for air on the water’s surface below. The waters that fill the Okavango start their journey in the Angolan Highlands, many hundreds of kilometers away, and gather vital nutrients on their way to the Okavango Delta basin, with fish and other aquatic species hitching a ride.

Another unique aspect of the Okavango is the mode of safari—boats and local canoes are an exciting way to get around and particularly suited to seeing the many bird species that fish the delta’s waters. Equally impressive are the islands within the delta, where the larger animals gather to feed and big predators hunt. Walking safaris can take guests up close to nature alongside an experienced team of guides for the more adventurous guests.
