After a flight of just under two hours, guests board a domestic flight to Mfuwe, from where they will be transferred to South Luangwa National Park . Mchenja Bush Camp overlooks the ebony tree-peppered shores of the Luangwa River. The Luangwa River inundates its flood plain periodically and, after a flood, occasionally diverts its course, leaving oxbow lakes astride the original channel. This instability produces the lush scenery and prolific ecosystem for which the Luangwa Valley is celebrated. Guests embark on their first safari in this incredible wilderness in the late afternoon.
The next two days are devoted to walking safaris and game drives in the area surrounding Mchenja. The Luangwa Valley is home to two endemic species - Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest - and a wealth of other plains game. Luangwa has also been dubbed ‘the Valley of the Leopard’ by safari enthusiasts, as it was one of the finest wilderness areas to observe leopard in their natural environment. Lion and spotted hyena also occur throughout, while African wild dog numbers are finally on the increase after an anthrax epidemic in the late 1980s.
After breakfast, guests depart Mchenja Bush Camp and trace the river southwest toward Chinzombo. Chinzombo roosts within a private 60-acre slice of wilderness with enviable riverfront real estate. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in South Luangwa National Park, and the unrivaled position of your luxury villa will ensure you encounter colorful flurries among the ancient trees and reed beds. Each villa also hosts its own plunge pool and a spacious patio where guests can relax and indulge in between safari activities.
Enjoy two full days exploring the African bush on the fringe of Chinzombo. The Luangwa River draws a remarkable concentration of game, ensuring that visitors will never venture far without a wild encounter. Safari activities range from game drives in open 4x4 vehicles to traversing the wilderness on foot - an engaging adventure that enables guests to learn more about their immediate environment and approach wildlife from a different perspective. Evenings at Chinzombo are fireside affairs, blending the warm light of the flames with the lustrous sparkle of the African night sky and thrilling soundtrack of the bush.
Following breakfast, guests are returned to Mfuwe for a flight to Lusaka. From Lusaka, guests connect to their flight back to Johannesburg, where their Zambia safari ends at the airport or any destination of their choice in either Johannesburg or Pretoria.
