From here, a short drive brings the tour to Lourensford, established in 1700. Here, centuries of winemaking heritage combine with modern innovation to produce exceptional wines. We enjoy a tasting in the elegant tasting room with stunning mountain and vineyard views. There is also a craft brewery and coffee roastery that should delight those who are not wine lovers.
From here, we visit Stellenbosch, one of the most beautiful and historically significant towns in South Africa. We walk along Dorp Street to view fine examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian, and Victorian architecture set amongst ancient oak trees. Lunch is followed by a visit to one of the fine wine estates on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, where guests can enjoy an introduction to wine-making in South Africa. Favorites are Lanzerac, Tokara or Rust en Vrede. We then make our way to the overnight destination in Cape Town.
This day of your Cape Town tour is devoted to the history and attractions found within the city. Adderley Street, the upper half of the Heerengracht, is traversed before walking down Government Avenue into the heart of Cape Town and enjoying a glimpse of the Houses of Parliament. The tour then visits the pentagonal Cape Castle, the oldest of all the buildings in South Africa, which now serves primarily as a museum. It houses both the Good Hope Gallery and the Military Museum. The latter is dedicated to preserving military artifacts covering the Dutch and British periods of occupation.
In the afternoon, we visit Bo Kaap and District Six for an immersive cultural and historical journey. The Bo Kaap Museum offers insights into the origins of the Cape Malay community, their culture, and the impact of Apartheid South Africa on the area. We then walk down Wale Street to marvel at the colorful houses before a short trip to District Six, where we visit the museum with the same name before returning to our hotel.
First on the agenda of the day is a visit to Table Mountain. The Portuguese explorer Antonio de Saldanha gave the flat-topped mountain its name. We ascend the mountain via the cableway, enjoying marvelous views of the Cape Town city bowl and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Upon reaching the summit, some time is devoted to visiting different vantage points from where impressive views of the Cape Peninsula can be enjoyed. Your guide also provides some information on the Cape Floral Kingdom, highlighting some of the fynbos species found on the mountain.
After lunch, we visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The gardens are a splendid display of South Africa's flora, focusing on the Cape Floral Kingdom. Among the exciting displays are the Fragrance Garden and Useful Plants Garden, which showcase plants used in traditional medicine and cooking. Another highlight is the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, which snakes amongst the treetops and offers splendid views of Table Mountain. Following the visit to the gardens, we return to the overnight accommodation via the Atlantic Seaboard.
After breakfast, the tour travels to Paardevlei near Somerset West, where time is devoted to visiting the Cheetah Outreach. Here, guests will gain some insight into the survival plight of the world's fastest animals. Cheetahs used to occur in vast numbers across Africa and Asia, yet today, there are only around a thousand cheetahs in South Africa. You will learn interesting facts and experience close encounters with a few of these beautiful animals. Jackals, meerkats, servals, caracals, and bat-eared foxes may also be observed.
After a memorable tour of Cape Town and the surrounding area, guests are accompanied to the airport or are dropped off at any location in Cape Town or adjacent areas.
