Guests will explore some of Cape Town's historic highlights before visiting the notorious prison on Robben Island, infamous for being the home of many political prisoners during the Apartheid era, most notably Nelson Mandela.
The tour begins with a visit to the Robben Island Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, where a ferry is boarded to the island. It is known as "a place where great men met" and is a historical reminder of the triumph of the human spirit in adverse circumstances. This historical landmark is synonymous with the struggle against Apartheid. You will visit the maximum security prison and relive the experience of what inmates went through daily while serving their sentences. A highlight of the tour is a visit to the cell of ex-President Nelson Mandela. In addition to the prison, the island is home to several mammal species ranging from deer to Cape fur seals. The ferry returns to the V&A waterfront, where guests can enjoy lunch before embarking on a tour of Cape Town's other attractions.
First on the afternoon's agenda is the Castle of Good Hope, which is historically significant in that it isĀ South Africa'sĀ oldest building. It served as both a prison and administrative headquarters to successive colonial rulers. After Cape Castle, we visited the Company's Gardens, established in early 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck as a vegetable garden. The original location was closer to the shoreline, and, in a bid to plant his crops in more fertile soil and on ground sheltered from the wind, he moved it to where it is today with its northern boundary on Wale Street. It is now a large public park and botanical garden home to a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond, and aviary. A transfer to your overnight destination follows the park visit.
