Guests will explore some of Cape Town's historic highlights before visiting the notorious prison on Robben Island.
Guests will be met at any location of their choice in Cape Town , from where they will be transferred to Table Bay harbor. The tour begins with a visit to the Robben Island Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. The island is known as "a place where great men met", and is a historical reminder of the triumph of the human spirit in adverse circumstances. This historical landmark is synonymous with the struggle against apartheid. You will visit the maximum security prison and relive the experience of what inmates went through on a daily basis while serving their sentences. A highlight of the tour is a visit to the cell of ex-President Nelson Mandela. In addition to the prison, the island is home to a number of different mammal species which range from deer to Cape fur seals. The ferry returns to the V&A waterfront where guests can enjoy lunch before embarking on a tour of Cape Town's other attractions.
First on the afternoon's agenda is the Castle of Good Hope, historically significant in that it is South Africa's oldest building. It served as both a prison and administrative headquarters to successive colonial rulers. After the Cape Castle, we visit the Company's Gardens, which was established in early 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck as a vegetable garden. The original location was closer to the shoreline, and, in a bid to plant his crops in more fertile soil and on ground sheltered from the wind, he moved it to where it is today with its northern boundary on Wale Street. It is now a large public park and botanical garden and is home to a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and aviary. During the late afternoon, guests are transferred to any location of their choice in Cape Town where this day tour of Robben Island and the city of Cape Town ends.
