Baobab Country, Big Skies, and Quiet Northern Roads

Punda Maria anchors Kruger’s far north, a quieter, bird-rich region of sandveld woodlands and scattered baobabs near the Punda Maria Gate. Expect intimate scale and classic self-catering comfort, a camp bird hide and shaded walkways, plus SANParks-guided drives and walks. Scenic day routes reach the Luvuvhu and Limpopo confluence at Crooks Corner, while historic sites and seasonal wild-dog and nyala country add variety for travelers who prefer off-the-beaten-track safaris.

Punda Maria has a wonderfully rustic and uncrowded feel that I have always enjoyed. I love the baobab-studded landscapes and always try to capture a sunrise over these magnificent trees. The area is excellent for birding and also provides access to the beautiful Luvuvhu River region.

Overview of Punda Maria Rest Camp

Punda Maria sits on a ridge in Kruger’s far north, close to the Punda Maria Gate and within a distinctive sandveld biome dotted with baobabs and tall woodland.

Location & Setting

The area’s quieter roads and varied topography lead toward the Luvuvhu Valley and the park’s northernmost viewpoints. In camp, a bird hide overlooks regular visitors, while the short Paradise Flycatcher Walk threads through shaded vegetation. Though remote from southern hubs, tar and gravel routes make day drives to river confluences and northern bridges straightforward for prepared travelers.

Rooms

The self-catering units include one- and two-bedroom bungalows with private bathrooms and either kitchenettes or access to communal kitchens, permanent safari tents and a campsite, all with braai facilities and shade.

Facilities

A small, licensed restaurant and a curio and convenience shop serve the camp, with communal kitchens and ablutions for non-en-suite options. The swimming pool has been closed for renovation, so check with us whether it has reopened before you travel. SANParks guides lead game drives and walks, the bird hide looks over the waterhole at the campsite, and the short Paradise Flycatcher trail fills time between activities. There is no Wi-Fi, but there is cellphone reception. Day routes run to Crooks Corner and the Pafuri region, and the Nyalaland Wilderness Trail, a pre-booked overnight walk, is run from the camp.
