From: POAWetlands Country House & Sheds is set on six hectares of stunning grass- and wetland about 100m from Martin's Dam in the sleepy town of Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is near the border with KwaZulu-Natal. It can be reached from Johannesburg in three and a quarter hours.
The guest house offers a total of nine bedrooms. Three are located in the old milking shed, three free-standing sheds are around the main house and in Water Oak Cottage. All rooms are en suite and are beautifully decorated. The sheds are fitted with fireplaces, which are handy during the cool winter months.
Should you tire of birding, guests can visit and feed the alpacas at a nearby home-spun yarn farm and learn more about the natural products that they yield. Wakkerstroom is also known as a fly fisherman's dream, with many dedicated trout farms in the area. Visitors frequently hike Ossewakop, translated to "ox-wagon head," a leisurely route up the mountain that overlooks the village.
