Reasons to Visit South Africa

1

Diversity

South Africa's diversity is what makes it such a good travel destination. Within a single country, visitors can experience cosmopolitan cities, fine sweeps of beaches, safaris in authentically wild settings, and more. Even the most seasoned travelers will agree that you would be hard-pressed to find such variety elsewhere and within such proximity.

2

Accessibility

South Africa's safari areas and top destinations are more accessible than many other African countries, and its excellent primary infrastructure ensures that even overland travel is easy and convenient. South Africa also caters better to travelers on a budget than, for example, Botswana and Zambia.

3

Family-friendly

For families traveling with small children, South Africa is the best choice for a safari, as visitors can enjoy safaris in malaria-free areas like Pilanesberg, Madikwe, Shamwari, and Addo. The lodges in the private game reserves offer fantastic programs for young nature lovers.

4

Special Interests

The country is a fine choice for visitors with special interests like history, culture, fine dining, birding, golf, star-gazing, rock art, and the like. South Africa truly has something for everyone, whether you seek the ultimate adventure, an informative discovery, or a leisurely getaway.

Experiences to be Savored

The wealth of unique experiences available in South Africa makes it difficult to select a standout few. Still, the adventures below are easily some of the most rewarding pursuits available in travel today.

Hiking in the Drakensberg

South Africa's famous Drakensberg escarpment stretches for over 1000km (600 miles) through three provinces and even another country (Lesotho). Breathtaking hiking trails abound through these mountains, which include ancient rock art sites at Kamberg and Giant's Castle.

Meeting the Big Five in Kruger Park

The Kruger Park offers Southern Africa's ultimate Big 5 experience. It is a two-million-hectare wilderness utopia that overflows with wildlife, including the famous Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo). A wide variety of accommodation options are available..

Cosmopolitan Cape Town

South Africa's 'Mother City' is a must-visit destination. The country's oldest settlement is inherently cosmopolitan yet rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. Dining is typically both an innovative and world-class experience, yet still unique to the city and its surroundings.

A South African vacation is a box of chocolates, a coat of many colors, a journey with such potential for experiences of all kinds. No region of South Africa is at all like another, and the cultural diversity packed into a modest population of only 60 million makes it all the more vibrant and exciting.

The country's natural beauty lends itself to nature lovers and safari enthusiasts to marvel at the many animal species that roam the landscape in their endless pursuit of survival. The Kruger National Park is the best-known national park in South Africa. Home to great herds of buffalo, elephant and all the rest of the big five, along with a great diversity of mammals and birds, the Kruger National Park is an annual pilgrimage for families in South Africa and a must-visit for any tourist.

Cape Town is the country's cultural hub, a metropolitan era with a rich history in international trade that has brought people from all corners of the globe. Johannesburg, the city of gold, with its satellite Sandton claiming the title of the 'richest square mile in Africa,' is the country's economic hub, with urban city hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and other big-city experiences. A vacation to South Africa has much to offer; there is much to explore before choosing where to go or what to do and see.

The rich diversity of plant life, rolling green hills, and wildflowers along the Western Cape's coast is the perfect getaway for relaxation, hiking, cycling, and plant-lovers. The West Coast is the flower capital, while on the south coast, an intriguing family of plants locally known as 'Fynbos' are king and dominate the landscape with their evergreen twig-like leaves and year-long flowers. The Garden Route, a prime tour destination on the south coast of the Western Cape, is home to some of the most beautiful protea and erica-dominated ecoregions and pristine beaches to match the floral beauty.

The sub-tropical east coast of South Africa is a lush green most of the year, with golden beaches and high mountains in its interior known as the Drakensberg mountains or uKhahlamba, 'barrier of spears.' Coastal forests, wetlands, and reefs call this part of South Africa home, along with the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve and iSimingaliso Wetland Park is a beautiful conservation area north of KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Finally, there is the Karoo and Kalahari, the arid heartland of South Africa. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, on South Africa's northern border with Botswana, starts at the edge of the Kalahari Desert and hosts several unique species, from desert lions to Gemsbok and mobs of meerkats. The Kgalagadi is known for its amazing game viewing opportunities, with large herds gathering around waterholes scattered throughout the park. Further west, past the Augrabies Waterfalls and just north of the Namaqualand, is the Richtersveld, a secluded corner of South Africa with hundreds of succulent species scattered among its towering hills.
