Sossusvlei is very popular amongst landscape photographers, and it is not hard to see why. The severe color palate, the undulating dunes, the unobstructed views, and the otherworldly atmosphere combine to create the most picturesque tableau. Whether you are a professional shutterbug or love candid snapshots, your Sossusvlei photos may prove your most memorable.
For a landscape that consists mainly of 'nothing,' Sossusvlei boasts an astounding number of adventures available. Tear across the dunes on a quad bike, clamber to the top of Big Daddy or Dune 45, wander through the crevices of Sesriem Canyon, relish the desert scenery on a leisurely nature drive, examine the landscape from above in a hot air balloon, or learn about the constellations while star gazing.
Sossusvlei offers a unique collection of accommodations with enhancements that make the most of the location, like Little Kulala's rooftop 'starbeds' for uninterrupted stargazing. Though isolated, you will be surprised by the quality of meals and the occasional decadence of the environment produced by these little desert bastions.
Though not nearly as productive in terms of the number of animals spotted, a desert game drive does offer the opportunity to view animals that have adapted to survive in these harsh conditions. The gemsbok and springbok are the most common antelope. The brown hyena is the largest carnivore that can be seen here.
The experiences available in and around Sossusvlei are inherently unique to the area. Nowhere will you marvel at the night sky quite like here, nor gape in awe at the aerial views from the balloon basket. Sossusvlei is one of a kind, and so are the experiences to savor.
A Safari in the desert might sound strange, but a visit to Sossusvlei will reveal that its strangeness is in fact intrigue. The desert is a mysterious place, where dunes shift with the winds, life is harsh and everything seems to be engulfed by the sand. It is in this place where life adapts some of the strangest and most impressive traits and behaviors.
Sossusvlei itself is a clay pan in the Namib-Naukluft National Park in the middle of the desert, gathering desert waters, little by little. Its sister pan is called Deadvlei, and together they make for some of the starkest photography on the planet. Huge shifting red dunes surround the thorn trees and sparse wild grasses that grow here, and petrified trees stand as though placed like sculptures against the desert backdrop. The region is home to a number of species, including the Gemsbok - the painted antelope, Springbok, Ostrich and a host of interesting desert reptiles.
Dune 45, a famous dune nearby, hosts all kinds of adventure activities, and quad-bike drives through the desert are of course a must for the whole family. Another well-known attraction in the area is Sesriem Canyon, an intricately carved network of passages in the rock, in the middle of the desert. Hot Air balloon rides depart near the Canyon everyday, giving guests an aerial view of the vivid landscape below.
